People seem to be divided into two separate camps when it comes to the subject of working online:
- those who want to find an easy job where they can become millionaires overnight without any effort
- and those who consider the whole thing to be one large scam
- "Does anyone know any genuine online work opportunities where I can earn lots without any investment?"
- "No, any work from home job is a scam."
The fact is, working online is just the same as any other type of work. You work hard, you invest time and effort (and money if needed), and you get to enjoy the fruit of your labour.
So where does this idea of working online being easy come from? And what does it really take to be successful working online?
People Believe What They Want to Believe
It's easy to see why working online is the dream of many. The freedom of working from anywhere holds a massive appeal and is something which only the arrival of the internet has made truly possible for many people.
The spread of the internet to the furthest reaches of the globe has made it easier still, and now all that you need is a mobile phone signal to get access to your emails.
But although the dream is appealing, many people simply don't want to consider the other aspect of working online (that it's going to be hard work!). They decide to believe what they want to about online work, and after a while ‘work from home' starts to mean ‘don't work at all'.
The Scams are Not Helping
The internet is full of ‘secret manuals' and ‘magic formulas' feeding the hungry masses who are desperate to find easy ways to earn money from home.
The promises are all around.
- Fill in surveys and get rich quick
- Create a free blog then sit back and watch the money roll in
- Buy a PLR ebook and make a fortune selling it on Amazon
But they are simply feeding into the desires of the market, providing people with what they want to hear.
No wonder they sell so well.
However, the truth is very different. And, sometimes, the truth hurts.
Online Work is Still Work
Earning a living online is not very different from earning a living in any other way. Yes, you can enjoy the freedom of being your own boss and working from anywhere. But if you want to be successful then any job involves:
- Hard work
- Determination
- Commitment
- Dedication
Freelance writing is a good example.
Starting a career as a writer is simple enough, by which I mean the processes are easy. Marketing, writing articles and dealing with clients are things that you can learn how to do easily without having to do an expensive course or go back to college for a couple of years.
It's the same with affiliate marketing. The processes are simple enough, but you still have to work really hard if you want them to pay off.
Just because all or part of your work is carried out online, it does not mean that the actual work you have to do to earn money is made any easier.
Two Things You Need to Know for Online Success
Want to be successful online? Here are two irrefutable truths that you will first have to accept:
1. You Won't Become Rich Overnight
You may become rich in a reasonably short time by working online in some capacity. But it's unlikely.
You can certainly make money quickly. And you can certainly become rich over time, there's no doubt about that. But these are two very different things and they are unlikely to occur together.
The internet is awash with stories of overnight riches. And boy do they sound good! But nearly all of them, if not all of them, are lies. Don't be fooled, and don't expect the impossible.
2. There Are No Magic Formulas
The amount of ‘secret' and ‘proven' ways to ‘earn thousands of dollars in your sleep' are all, quite frankly, too good to be true.
People are constantly coming up with new ways to sell information to those gullible enough to buy it. Either that or they just rehash new ways to say the same old thing. Just like all those weight-loss products, making millions by selling themselves coming up with innumerable variations of the same basic idea (‘eat less, exercise more').
And even when these formulas do briefly work or at least make sense, things change so fast online. If someone finds a way to get their website to page one in Google overnight, you can bet that by the time you have finished reading the ebook that explains the process you will be too late.
Only invest your time and money in something that is not a fad.
And that invariably means something which involves working hard and putting in long hours.
The Golden Age of Online Work
I love the fact that I can earn money as long as I have my computer and access to the internet. I've always wanted to be free, to never be chained to a desk or have to book my holiday when it suits my boss. It doesn't get much better than earning your own income from anywhere you choose.
But I also accepted that it would take a lot of had work and determination to be able to enjoy such a fantastic job.
More people than ever are now aware of the options for working from home. And online work is not a fad, a scam or anything of the sort.
Real jobs undertaken by real people who want to make a real living by doing real work are out there, and there are more options available now than ever before.
Working online is a great way to live, and there are so many benefits of this line of work. But don't go in with unreal expectations, and don't dismiss it when it turns out to be harder than you thought it would be.
Go into it with the right attitude from the start and you're already heading down the road to success.
